Poem:

After Dinner

In the spiteful evenings she and
I walk towards a comatose sun.

She holds my hand, a rusty handcuff,
we each swallowed half the key.

Around barley fields, just past
the farmer’s dead barn, buzzards
bark out ostentatious love songs.

The smell of manure and sex
burn our nostrils like a nursery on fire.

We stand at an abandoned bus stop, kill time,
move from rotten apple to rotten apple.

Our shadows move with shaky bounce.
Wading pool ripples, a nervous mouth quiver.

We don’t know where the day started
or where it will end.
