Emma Trelles

Emma Trelles was born at Mercy Hospital in Miami, Florida, where she grew up with her brother and Cuban-immigrant parents in a modest home in the enclave of Weschester. She received a B.A. in English  and M.F.A. in creative writing from Florida International University. She is the author of Tropicalia (University of Notre Dame Press, 2011), winner of the Andres Montoya Poetry Prize, and Little Spells (GOSS183 Press), a recommended read by the Valparaiso Poetry Review and The Montserrat Review.

She worked for many years as a staff writer at newspapers such as New Times Broward*Palm Beach (Village Voice Media); Street Weekly (the Miami Herald); and The Sun Sentinel (The Tribune Corp.), and she has freelanced for those papers and other magazines as well, including Latina, Newsday, the Palm Beach ArtsPaper, and Organica.

She is a series editor in The Tigertail Poetry Annual, and she was the guest editor for MiPOesias Magazine’s American-Cuban Issue and OCHO: The Travel Issue.Twice nominated for the Pushcart Prize in poetry, and the recipient of a Green Eyeshade Award in art criticism, she has taught creative writing at the Florida Center for the Literary Arts and the Art Center of South Florida, and she currently works as an arts writer, an editor, and a writing consultant at Nova Southeastern University. Emma Trelles is also a regular contributor to the Best American Poetry blog.

She has been a featured reader, or will soon read, at the O, Miami Poetry Festival, the Miami Book Fair International, Busboys and Poets in Washington D.C., and at the Palabra Pura series at the Guild Literary Complex in Chicago. Her poems and essays have been published  in the Best of the Net 2010 Anthology, The Rumpus, Verse Daily, 3:AM Magazine, Poets and Artists, Gulf Stream, and New Millennium Writings, among other places.
