We can pity the women who married Ted Hughes.
Tender -sinned, perhaps, with domicile wounds
Leaped without looking as if nothing to lose.
Mad Sylvia apparently so easily bruised.
Flightless Assia an exotic on so foreign a soil.
We should pity the women who married Ted Hughes.
I guess Sylvia thought she should be his damned muse.
She’s changing nappies, he’s the beast with two backs.
So full tilt with the gas as if nothing to lose.
Assia stunning, but lost when Ted was so rude.
She murdered their daughter with ghastly propane.
We all do pity the women who married Ted Hughes.
Did Assia think that their deaths, her love, would prove?
Speaking German, Hebrew, and French meant little
Chose instead to up the ante as if nothing to lose.
Were there better men, then, for each to choose?
His poetry: fish cold, blank of verve, sparse.
We could pity the women who married Ted Hughes.
They leaped without looking as if nothing to lose.
